Does this ideal approach even exist? Ideal means that it is precisely the right thing for those involved at a given time in a specific situation. An approach can be understood as a defined way of acting.
Every coachee enters the coaching session with a specific idea of how the conversation might unfold. Sometimes they already have concrete expectations regarding the process, or, based on past experiences, fears about how it might not go. The coach, of course, arrives prepared and has developed one or more approaches that have proven to achieve good professional results.
It's all about the essence! – This must be relevant to the coachee, because he or she is the client. The coachee is actively engaged with their senses during the initial consultation, and these need to be assessed.
What do I see – as a coachee, do I like what I see? The person, their eye contact, facial expressions, and nonverbal body language of the Agile Coach?
Listening – does what is being said come across as plausible and clear? Do I like the voice? Do I have all the necessary information? Do I understand the flow of the conversation? Do we have a good and easy-to-maintain basis for communication?
Touch – how does the handshake feel? Pleasant? Or not?
Intuition – Do I feel understood about myself and my concerns? Are our values and ideas aligned? Is there a good connection? Do I feel secure enough to confide in the coach? Am I getting what I expect for my money? Will the coaching help me grow personally?
The ideal approach an Agile Coach offers a coachee can be anything they want. The possibilities are numerous. Personally, I consider it essential that the initial consultation includes a coaching session with goal setting, in-depth discussion, and a summary of the results. This is only fair to the coachee. It allows them to gain a maximum basis for decision-making with minimal effort, enabling them to determine whether the Agile Coaching will be successful. Just give it a try. The feedback at the end of the initial consultation will indicate whether and how the coaching should proceed. Improvements are always possible and encouraged. After all, the Ferris wheel invites you to take several turns.
