Agile coaching is a trend. Agile coaching is established. Agile coaching is a viable method for guiding and supporting individuals or groups on their professional journey towards agility.
If you're considering agile coaching, several questions need to be answered. Is now the right time? What do I want to achieve? What are the benefits for me and those around me? Who should I entrust with this responsible and exciting task? How do I find the right match? What qualifications and experience would I expect from an agile coach? What personal qualities should this person possess for us to work well together? And what qualifications do I, as the coachee, need? And so on.
From my perspective, the right time is: always!
Ideally, as a coachee, you have the desire and enthusiasm to actively develop your skills in agility. And you realize that you're ready to embrace new things and reflect on your own approach. Interestingly, I don't consider the level of knowledge and experience regarding agility and various practices to be the determining factor. Anything is possible. In my experience, the range of times when coaching begins is vast. It might be to develop and empower a person for a new role, such as Product Owner or Scrum Master. It might be to strengthen and develop an entire team. Or it might be to further empower an already experienced role holder within an Agile Release Train (ART) based on SAFe. Or it might even be for a middle manager to redefine their role.
What is your opinion? When was the right time for you to start agile coaching?
