Documentation in an agile context

"We value working software more than comprehensive documentation." The Agile Manifesto assigns less importance to documentation than the traditional, phase-oriented approach. Nevertheless, adequate and up-to-date product documentation remains crucial, because in a modern DevOps approach, not only short-term project success ("Working software has been successfully deployed to production") counts, but also cost-effective operation and effective further development by the team, which may have been replaced or supplemented by new people after the completion of an initial solution—people who were not part of the original development.

For example, the following questions arise in everyday life:

• When do we start documenting if there is a risk that the solution will be discarded or massively modified?
• What is the difference between project documentation and product documentation?
• What constitutes adequate product documentation?
• How, when, and by whom is product documentation created?
• How can product documentation be kept up to date?
• Which tools support agile documentation?

This moderated workshop provides practical answers to these questions and more, as well as ample opportunity for practice and discussion.

Program & Content

Half day

The workshop begins with a theoretical section on knowledge transfer and the state of the art regarding documentation in an agile context, thus establishing a foundation. This is followed by identifying paint points and a deep dive into the problem to focus attention.

Whole day

In a second step, a documentation strategy is developed based on the problem definition.
